Former President Donald Trump said the FBI went through his safe during a raid at Mar-a-Lago on Monday.
The FBI executed a search warrant at the former president's home in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said in a statement.
"These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," the statement said.
"They even broke into my safe!" Trump added.
The execution of the search warrant was first reported by Florida Politics.
Trump is currently being investigated by The Justice Department for his involvement in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 US election.
Barbara McQuade, a former federal prosecutor, told Insider that in order to obtain a search warrant, the FBI would have had to satisfy a federal judge that there was probable cause a specific crime had taken place at Trump's home.
"Search warrants usually come toward the end of an investigation because they require a showing of probable cause and because they tend to tip off the suspect that they are under investigation," said McQuade, a former Obama-era US attorney.
In his statement, Trump called the raid "prosecutorial misconduct" and compared the incident to Watergate.
"What is the difference between this and Watergate, where operatives broke into the Democrat National Committee?" the statement said.
Representatives for Trump and the FBI did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
